The majority of NGVs operate using compacted natural gas so the fuel occupies
less space. At a encouraging station, gas is squeezed to 3, 000-3, 600 lbs per
square inch prior to being pumped into high-pressure, tube-shaped cylinders that
are attached with the rear, top or undercarriage of the vehicle. The storage
space tanks of early NGVs were bulky and used much of the vehicle's cargo area,
but newer, more light-weight cylinders have been developed. Known as Integrated
Storage Systems (ISSs), these all-composite cylinders tend to be contained
within a fiberglass covering and impact-absorbing foam to safeguard them in the
event of a crash. The actual cylinders also have a smaller size so that three of
them could be housed together in a shape and size resembling a conventional
gasoline container.
