Product sales of diesel vehicles are in an all-time high which is predicted
to continue. Training courses are also seeing an increase associated with
air/fuel related issues of doubt from customers. With more than 50 years'
experience within the tools - he labored on the very first LandCruiser to arrive
within Australia - well known diesel powered repairer Allan Gray stocks his
concerns with us.
Formerly we've been aware of carbon build-up in modern diesels, however
according to Allan dirty energy is just as bad, if not even worse.
Common Rail Diesels is an excellent modern development, utilizing very high
injector rail difficulties (25, 000 - thirty, 000 PSI). They create high torque
at reduced revs, have much enhanced fuel economy and, best of all, they have got
dramatically reduced particle emissions.
"We speak to workshops as well as vehicle owners every day and they are
revealing some cases of serious damage to diesel-powered pumps, injectors and
motors, largely caused by contaminated gas, therefore most of these dramas might
have been avoided, " Allan stated.
"Older diesel vehicles are not so much of a problem. More recent diesels
have much better tolerances and in my opinion need superior filtration. I
recommend extra filtration to my clients.
"The requirement for 'ultra clean' fuel was not as essential on these older
models as most had more nice tolerances and in most cases had been fitted with
adequate filtration.
"The fuel system pressure inside older (non common rail) engines was around
three thousand PSI, whereas now stresses are nearly 10 times just as much.
"OE filters fitted to most typical rail engines are not sufficient in my
opinion and I suggest keepers to fit a second (primary) filtration system. "
The bottom line is that all diesels need clean air, fuel and also oil.
Injectors in previously diesels pulse millions of occasions in 100, 000km.
Defective injectors can cause serious motor damage if they are just squirting
fuel into the cylinder instead of atomising it thoroughly. This could go
unnoticed until expensive damage has occurred.
Typical Rail Diesels inject as much as six times each shooting stroke and any
indicator of a problem should be taken care of immediately. It is a factory
necessity to change injector pipes simultaneously as injectors. The gasoline not
consumed by the powerplant (up to 80%) is utilized to cool the injectors and is
returned to the container (in some vehicles through a radiator).
"It is not unusual for your fuel in the tank to achieve 80°C, so to minimise
moisture build-up or condensation, the fuel tank ought to be kept topped up
frequently to reduce the introduction of algae which could grow in the warm
atmosphere. Algaecides are not normally utilized in fuel additives as they are
mainly carcinogenic. "
